Crash-diet escapee on way to jail
From: AAP
By Amy Coopes

January 21, 2006

A DANGEROUS escapee whose crash diet enabled him to squeeze through jail bars has been caught after three days on the run – window shopping in a busy Sydney mall. After making international headlines with his elaborate escape – apparently achieved with the help of laxatives – Robert Cole will now spend winter in a maximum security cell.

Cole, 36, has been on the run since Wednesday, after slipping through the bars of his hospital cell window at Long Bay jail.

The mentally ill prisoner had shed up to 14kg on a crash diet of laxatives to fit his tiny 56kg frame through the brickwork and steel bars.

Cole was serving time for assault and theft and had previously been jailed for carnal knowledge and armed robbery.

Police, acting on a tip-off, swooped on the unsuspecting escapee, among busy Saturday morning shoppers at Bondi Junction's Oxford Street mall about 10.15am (AEDT).

He was followed from Bronte Road across the mall into Grosvenor Lane, where he was arrested without incident.

He was limping, with a leg injury apparently sustained during his audacious escape.

Detective Inspector Wayne Gordon, of the robbery and serious crime squad, said Cole appeared to have been staying in the Bondi Junction area.

He was in the company of a 40-year-old woman, believed to have been harbouring Cole since his escape.

She is expected to be charged with maintaining an escapee and will appear in Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

Det Insp Gordon could not comment further on her role or the nature of their relationship.

Corrective services security and intelligence commander Brian Kelly said Cole would be shipped immediately to Goulburn jail where he would spend the winter in a maximum security cell.

"He will be kept very securely I can assure you," Comm Kelly said.

"He will be in a maximum security environment...at Goulburn. It has no history of escapes and it's secure enough to contain this particular prisoner."

"Prison will be harsher for Mr Cole after this because there's a heightened level of security that he will be contained in."

Cole would not be held in solitary confinement, but would be subjected to 24-hour surveillance from the manned watchtowers, Comm Kelly said.

The Iemma Government came under fire, following the escape, for removing 24-hour guards from Long Bay's watchtowers.

Cole is expected to be charged with escaping lawful custody and will appear in court,

The prison escapee's name is Cole, the mall was on
Oxford Street in Sydney. Story is dated January 21,

Kind regards, Jack

Long Bay Correctional Facility escapee Robert Cole

A dangerous escapee whose crash diet enabled him to
squeeze through jail bars has been caught after three
days on the run - window shopping in a busy Sydney
mall.

After making international headlines with his
elaborate escape - apparently achieved with the help
of laxatives - Robert Cole will now spend winter in a
maximum security cell.

Cole, 36, has been on the run since Wednesday, after
slipping through the bars of his hospital cell window
at Long Bay jail.

The mentally-ill prisoner had shed up to 14kg on a
crash diet of laxatives to fit his tiny 56kg frame
through the brickwork and steel bars.

Cole was serving time for assault and theft and had
previously been jailed for carnal knowledge and armed
robbery.

Police, acting on a tipoff, swooped on the
unsuspecting escapee, among busy Saturday morning
shoppers at Bondi Junction's Oxford Street mall about
10.15am (AEDT).

He was followed from Bronte Road across the mall into
Grosvenor Lane, where he was arrested without
incident.

He was limping, with a leg injury apparently sustained
during his audacious escape.

Detective Inspector Wayne Gordon, of the robbery and
serious crime squad, said Cole appeared to have been
staying in the Bondi Junction area.

He was in the company of a 40-year-old woman, believed
to have been harbouring Cole since his escape.

She is expected to be charged with maintaining an
escapee and will appear in Parramatta Local Court
tomorrow.

Det Insp Gordon could not comment further on her role
or the nature of their relationship.

Corrective services security and intelligence
commander Brian Kelly said Cole would be shipped
immediately to Goulburn jail where he would spend the
winter in a maximum security cell.

"He will be kept very securely I can assure you," Comm
Kelly said.

"He will be in a maximum security environment...at
Goulburn. It has no history of escapes and it's secure
enough to contain this particular prisoner."

"Prison will be harsher for Mr Cole after this because
there's a heightened level of security that he will be
contained in."

Cole would not be held in solitary confinement, but
would be subjected to 24-hour surveillance from the
manned watchtowers, Comm Kelly said.

The Iemma government came under fire, following the
escape, for removing 24-hour guards from Long Bay's
watchtowers.

He is expected to be charged with escaping lawful
custody and will appear in court, via videolink, on a
date to be fixed.
