Thousands Delayed When Sign Falls On Freeway
POSTED: 7:58 am PST January 23, 2006
UPDATED: 3:50 pm PST January 23, 2006
A major San Diego freeway reopened Monday after a truck knocked down an overhead sign and closed it for most of the morning.
http:// http://NEW IMAGES: Freeway Sign Collapses

The California Highway Patrol let traffic back onto northbound Interstate 805 just after 11:40 a.m. All northbound lanes had been closed since about 7:35 a.m., when a container truck knocked an overhead freeway sign across traffic lanes just before the Mesa College Drive off-ramp.

The accident brought traffic to a standstill and caused a backup through central San Diego into National City. When it became clear that it would take several hours to clear the roadway, the California Highway Patrol set up traffic breaks to force vehicles off the freeway at Murray Ridge Road and Interstate 8 in Mission Valley.Witnesses said the truck, which was carrying a CalPac Recycling bin, was traveling with the bin fully raised 29 feet in the air when it went under the sign. The bin hit the steel sign, which weighs about 17.5 tons, and knocked it off of one support pole. The sign came came crashing down on a Hyundai Elantra sedan, which was partially crushed. A Volkswagen Jetta behind the Hyundai was not able to stop in time and crashed into the sign, witnesses said.

The driver of the Hyundai was knocked unconscious by the crash. His wrist was also broken. The driver of the Volkswagen was not seriously injured, according to officials.A crane was brought in sometime after 9 a.m. and began the process of removing the sign.

At about 10:30 a.m, officials revised their estimate of how long it would take to clear the roadway. Originally, they thought I-805 would remain closed until as late as 2 p.m. , but crews were able to cut the sign into sections and truck it off the freeway much sooner.

Hey Brian!
Just sending you an e-mail to tell you that your prediction about the sign
falling on route 805 (I think that was the number) already happened.. I saw
it on the news this morning. Too bad your prediction didn't come earlier!
Luckily there were only injuries, apparently. Thanks!

reply

Thanks, I'm trying to get my predictions out earlier, but this was published 12 hours before the accident.

Freeway Sign Collapses in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- An 18-ton sign over a freeway fell on a car after a
recycling truck slammed into it during the morning rush hour Monday,
officials said. One person was injured.

The truck had its hydraulic boom raised, holding up a recycling bin, when it
struck the sign, which was 20 feet above the pavement and spanned northbound
Interstate 805, state Transportation Department spokesman Steve Saville
said.

A 39-year-old man in the car was freed by rescue crews and taken to a
hospital with a broken wrist. The 67-year-old driver of the truck was not
injured.

The driver didn't know the boom was extended, and it can be operated only
from the outside of the truck, the California Highway Patrol said. Officials
are investigating the possibility of mechanical failure.

The northbound lanes were closed north of downtown San Diego, and traffic
backed up for miles.

Couldn't sleep, turned on CNN and saw that in San Diego, an overhead sign on a hiway, fell and hit a car!  You are a wonder!!

Injuries Reported After San Diego Freeway Sign Falls
POSTED: 11:51 am CST January 23, 2006
A freeway north of downtown San Diego is jammed for miles because a sign fell on a couple of cars.

A spokesman at the California Department of Transportation said a garbage truck hit the sign spanning several lanes. The spokesman said injuries are reported.Officials expect traffic to be backed up for several hours on Interstate 805. In the meantime, they're rerouting traffic to other highways.

Several ambulances and fire trucks were at the accident scene to help extract victims from at least two wrecked passenger vehicles. Officials said that several motorists were seriously injured and had been transported to local hospitals.
