EMERGENCY service workers face a troubling wait for the results of asbestos tests as the New South Wales Government plays down their possible exposure to the deadly fibre during counter-terrorism training.

Defence and emergency services personnel were last week told they may have been exposed to asbestos in rubble during exercises at Holsworthy Army Barracks in Sydney last September.

The scare coincides with government admissions that 215 public schools have been cleaned for asbestos and another 15 are under remediation.

And new concerns arose today after the NSW Opposition revealed asbestos fibres had been disturbed at Eastwood train station in Sydney.

Unions NSW secretary John Robertson today called on the NSW government to hold an inquiry into how the asbestos came to be at the Holsworthy barracks, and warned "thousands" might have been exposed during the exercises.

Premier Morris Iemma, who visited the barracks during the training, is himself among those classed as a low-level, category-C risk because of his proximity to the rubble containing the asbestos.

Mr Iemma today said a scientific assessment concluded the asbestos found at the barracks posed only a minimal threat to personnel.

"It confirms the risk of exposure, such as those at the site, leading to an asbestos-induced illness, is generally considered to be low," he told parliament.

"The site was used, from time to time, by the NSW Fire Brigades and other emergency services for specialised rescue training.

"Victims for these operations (were) covered in dust from this rubble, it's (a) potential exposure for them," he said.

The NSW Police Association estimated about 200 of its members might have been exposed to asbestos during the exercises.

NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner Greg Mullins conceded "hundreds" of workers could have been exposed to asbestos at the site.

He said staff would be tested for exposure, and acknowledged the fire brigades could be forced to pay compensation.

"Potentially it could cost a lot of money (but) I would say money is no object when the welfare of staff is involved," Mr Mullins said.

"I'm focusing at the moment on the welfare of employees. We are not (shirking) any responsibility from this.

"Whatever comes of the investigation we will face up to."

He said an inquiry was under way into the failure to carry out checks for asbestos when NSW took control of parts of the site from the federal government in 2004, he said.

Liberal MP Andrew Tink told Parliament that contractors had disturbed asbestos fibres at Eastwood train station, in his electorate.

Mr Iemma confirmed the contractors had stopped work at the station after the discovery and said rail staff would undergo medical tests.

Deputy Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said the Government was failing to tackle asbestos contamination in public buildings.

"This is a Government without coordinated plans to tackle the asbestos plague across the state sector," Mr O'Farrell said.

IMHO: sounds almost like a mine collapse, or at a push the collapse of a building containing enormous amounts of asbestos. As I said below - I wasn't even aware of this organisation - and I can't think off-hand what previous event could have occurred where these dudes helped that now could have 'after-shocks' with the same effetc. Maybe some of your other Aussie 'researchers' could help.

Brian, not so much proof but information. I wasn't even aware of this organisation!
