Brian,

About your weight loss tea recipe, it appears you could have written 'Mustard Seed', Fennel (seed) and maybe cardammon (sp)??
At the very top did you write 'Spirulina'?

Take care,
Linda A.

reply

Hi, that's what it looks like.

Brian

You asked if the other two ingredients exist - yes they do.  Cardomon is a spice - bought as pods or ground.  Fennel is a herb.
When I first read this message I felt it was directed at me, I had been wondering whether I should ask you about a weight loss recipe where the ingredients would be available for me to easily obtain.  Most of the recipes I've seen of yours incorporate native american plants.  I just didn't want to wait the 9 months so I put the question out to the universe.  Also the spirulina connection too, I had been wondering whether I should buy it, in fact I did.

Hi, thank you very much for this and will post it...hopefully it will help others.

5.12.2006Hi Brian,
its Cardamom and Fennel,
you can make a fennel tea if your son has colic or upset tummy, just steep a teaspoon of fennelseeds in hot water, then strain and let it cool a bit, then drink.

I looked up the medical benefits for these foods,
now only need to know the quantities.

Cheers, Annette

Thanks, will post this.

mustard

The unique healing properties of mustard seeds can partly be attributed to their home among the Brassica foods found in the cruciferous plant family.

Phytonutrient Compounds Protective Against Gastrointestinal Cancer

Like other Brassicas, mustard seeds contain plentiful amounts of phytonutrients called glucosinolates. The seeds also contain myrosinase enzymes that can break apart the glucosinolates into other phytonutrients called isothiocyanates. The isothiocyanates in mustard seed (and other Brassicas) have been repeatedly studied for their anti-cancer effects. In animal studies – and particularly in studies involving the gastrointestinal tract and colorectal cancer – intake of isothiocyanates has been shown to inhibit growth of existing cancer cells and to be protective against the formation of such cells.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects from Selenium and Magnesium

Mustard seeds emerged from our food ranking system as a very good source of selenium a nutrient which has been shown to help reduce the severity of asthma, decrease some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and help prevent cancer. They also qualified as a good source of magnesium. Like selenium, magnesium has been shown to help reduce the severity of asthma, to lower high blood pressure, to restore normal sleep patterns in women having difficulty with the symptoms of menopause, to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks, and to prevent heart attack in patients suffering from atherosclerosis or diabetic heart disease.

Mustard seeds also qualified as a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as a good source of iron, calcium, zinc, manganese, magnesium, protein, niacin and dietary fiber.Cardamom

In India, green cardamom (A. subulatum) is broadly used to treat infections in teeth and gums, to prevent and treat throat troubles, congestion of the lungs and pulmonary tuberculosis, inflammation of eyelids and also digestive disorders. It is also reportedly used as an antidote for both snake and scorpion venom.

Species in the genus Amomum is also used in traditional Indian medicine. Among other species, varieties and cultivars, Amomum villosum is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat stomach-aches, constipation, dysentery, and other digestion problems. "Tsaoko" cardamom is cultivated in the Yunnan province of China, both for medicinal purposes and as a spice.fennel

Unique Phytonutrients with Antioxidant and Anti-Cancer Effects

Like many of its fellow spices, fennel contains its own unique combination of phytonutrients – including the flavonoids rutin, quercitin, and various kaempferol glycosides – that give it strong antioxidant activity. The phytonutrients in fennel extracts compare favorably in research studies to BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), a potentially toxic antioxidant commonly added to processed foods.

The most fascinating phytonutrient compound in fennel, however, may be anethole – the primary component of its volatile oil. In animal studies, the anethole in fennel has repeatedly been shown to reduce inflammation and to help prevent the occurrence of cancer. Researchers have also proposed a biological mechanism that may explain these anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. This mechanism involves the shutting down of a intercellular signaling system called tumor necrosis factor (or TNF)-mediated signaling. By shutting down this signaling process, the anethole in fennel prevents activation of a potentially strong gene-altering and inflammation-triggering molecule called NF-kappaB. The volatile oil has also been shown to be able to protect the liver of experimental animals from toxic chemical injury.

Antioxidant Protection and Immune Support from Vitamin C

In addition to its unusual phytonutrients, fennel bulb is an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is the body's primary water-soluble antioxidant, able to neutralize free radicals in all aqueous environments of the body. If left unchecked, these free radicals cause cellular damage that results in the pain and joint deterioration that occurs in conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The vitamin C found in fennel bulb is directly antimicrobial and is also needed for the proper function of the immune system, which makes foods high in vitamin C helpful for preventing recurrent ear infections in people who are prone to getting them. A high intake of vitamin C is associated with a decreased risk of atherosclerosis, colon cancer, and the complications of diabetes, such as nerve damage and diabetic heart disease. A cup of fennel supplies 17.4% of the daily value for vitamin C.

Fiber, Folate and Potassium for Cardiovascular and Colon Health

As a very good source of fiber, fennel bulb may help to reduce elevated cholesterol levels as well as the diarrhea or constipation symptomatic of irritable bowel syndrome. And since fiber also removes potentially carcinogenic toxins from the colon, fennel bulb may also be useful in preventing colon cancer. In addition to its fiber, fennel is a very good source of folate, a B vitamin that is necessary for the conversion of a dangerous molecule called homocysteine into other, benign molecules. At high levels, homocysteine, which can directly damage blood vessel walls, is considered a significant risk factor for heart attack or stroke. Fennel is also a very good source of potassium, a mineral that helps lower high blood pressure, another risk factor for stroke and heart attack. In a cup of fennel, you'll receive 10.8% of the daily value for fiber, 5.9% of the DV for folate, and 10.3% of the DV for potassium.

So the recipe for weight loss as I think I understand it:

Mix equal parts of Spirulina, Cardamon, Fennel and Mustard Seed.
Boil in water for one _ _ _.  (min?  hour? Or something else?)

Will burn calories 3 x faster than normal.

BUT:  Spirulina is listed separately from the other three ingredients.

It would make the tea taste horrible, too.  I wonder if you’re supposed

to make the tea of Cardamon, Fennel and Mustard Seed, and also

take Spirulina (in capsules, hopefully)

I’m just trying to make sense of this!  I was injured last year and was

unable to stand or walk for months.  Now that I can move again, I need

to lose some weight!
